Lößnitz

Lößnitz is one of the oldest towns in the Ore Mountains and was first mentioned in a document in 1238 as "Lessnitz", ("the forest town"). The small town is embedded in a long valley.

As early as 1284, the place was described as a "fully developed town" ("Civitas"), with all the privileges that go with it. The Burgraves of Meissen founded Lößnitz and began to build up the fortified town. At the same time, it was also in their power to give the town a mayoral constitution, to have coins struck (a mint master is mentioned in a document in 1286), as well as to provide it with further privileges (brewing, milling and salt trading rights, among others).

Lößnitz was laid out according to plan. Starting from a square market, streets and alleys lead on all sides to the former 3 town gates.

Its geographical location was decisive for the development of the town in the Middle Ages. Two important trade routes - the salt and iron routes - crossed here.
